The Hemp House
Location: Bridgetown

Materials: Hemp-lime blocks and timber-framed internal walls

Multi-generation living. Designed with three 'pods' connected by a timber walkway.

Energy Efficiency and sustainable details:
Designed to capture the northern winter sun and cross ventilation. Eaves are calculated to allow winter sun and block summer sun. Hemp blocks are a sustainable resource and carbon neutral.
Karrinyup Home
Location: Karrinyup

Materials: Double brick, acrylic render, feature stone cladding
A family home with extensive rear entertaining areas. Skillion roofs and raking ceilings to the living, meals and kitchen.
A beautiful Alfresco adjacent to the lap pool.
Energy Efficiency and Sustainability:
Extensive Northern windows in the living areas to gain winter sun, protected in Summer with a vergola. Western windows are protected. Cross ventilation to all habitable rooms.
The Curved House
The site is rather challenging with a 5m drop from the rear to the front.

Energy Efficiency and Sustainability:
There is a large amount of glazing facing west to maximize the ocean views, this is protected by the balcony overhang. Whilst northern windows gain winter sun to the living areas. Exposed concrete floors to the upper floor provide thermal mass for heat gain in winter.
The White House
Location: Hillarys

Materials: White brick, exposed steel and a colorbond concealed roof.
A multi-generation home to house adult children in their own separate wing. The master suite is separate to allow for the parents' privacy. High raked ceilings in the living areas allow Northern light to stream through the apex windows.

Energy Efficiency and Sustainability:
The facade is designed to protect the northern windows yet allow the sun to warm the living areas in winter. The exposed concrete slab provides thermal mass in winter to heat the areas.

The Design Mill was established by hands-on award-winning designer Julie Ann Canal in 1999. We specialize in building design and drafting of new homes, renovations and additions. We believe that you know what will work for your home, your needs and your family but you can't quite put it together. That is where we come in, as Julie and Kym have an uncanny gift of being able to 'tune in' to your ideas, understand the plethora of pictures, the scribbles and thoughts you have, and turn them into more than you ever thought possible.
