Founder
Julie founded The Design Mill in 1999.
Julie has an innate ability to connect with her clients, understand their needs, wants and wishes and translate this into the design. Julie's clients have been known to say "I'm sure you can see inside my head!". Design is Julie's passion, building rapport and understanding clients are her gift

Julie will often challenge her clients by looking at alternative ideas and options as, after all, isn't that why you have hired a designer?
"If your designer draws exactly what 'you want' them to design with no feedback or alternative ideas...please, for the love of design, your lifestyle and the final result....run for the hills!"
Julie will always give open and honest advice if something doesn't work in terms of flow, aesthetics or layout (even if you love it). She will tell you. Hence, it is essential to trust your designer and build a relationship of mutual respect and approachability. Designing your dream home is a rewarding and personal experience, so choose wisely. If something does not 'feel' right, trust your instincts.

The Why:
The Design Mill was born in 1999 because Julie was frustrated working for others as she knew she could authentically care for her clients and create the design they NEED, not what they are coerced into, to suit profits or convenience. Julie was aware that Design is a crucial element in a building project. It's 'the' area that's extremely difficult and costly to rectify. Great design enhances the lifestyle and health of the occupants.

Mission Statement:
Julie's mission is to aid busy professionals in designing and building their dream homes by managing their projects creatively and passionately whilst building authentic relationships.

Things you may not know:
Julie is a fitness nerd! She's often found running, hanging from a pull-up bar or upside down on the gym rings early in the mornings. 'It's the best way to start the day."

A process in which clients have enjoyed the journey and love the final result.

Industry Involvement:
Julie also lectures and is part of the curriculum writing team at North Metropolitan TAFE in Building Design. She is a board member of the FAPS Training Council. Julie is an active member of Design Matters National. You can rest assured that you are in very experienced hands.

Kym Pethybridge
Design Manager
Kym is incredible on many levels!
We are indeed very lucky to have Kym on board.
Apart from being a great designer, Kym is 'the' writing guru for projects. It has been stated by one of our clients, Chris:

Kym wants her clients to achieve their dream homes and will guide them through the design and building process in a relaxed and friendly manner.

Things you may not know:
Kym is a martial arts expert! She is a tactical weapon and Krav Maga instructor (I know, incredible!). Something interesting to chat to her about when you see her next!
If you have not already guessed, she loves her four-legged fur babies.

Caritha Martens
Designer
Caritha is an extraordinary designer and detail draftsperson. The Design Mill is fortunate to have Caritha as part of the business. She brings a wealth of construction, codes, and design knowledge to the team.

Caritha has over 20 years of experience within the industry. Her construction and detailing skills work seamlessly with Julie and Kym's design capabilities. Caritha's attention to detail on construction documentation ensures that our builders have the necessary information to build your home or renovations to the detail our Builders expect.

Caritha will constantly challenge herself to provide drawings and documentation that exceed the clients' and builders' expectations.
